New Delhi : India is placed at a lowly sixth place in the list of seven developing countries by a survey on quality of education conducted by industry body Assocham.
While only Indonesia is lagging behind India, Russia is a a front runner in providing quality education, the survey said.
China, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa follow Russia in that order.
Although primary education is compulsory and there is a legal guarantee of free education, the enrollment ratio in primary education is least in India at 98.1. The highest ratio is in Brazil (148.5) followed by China (116.2) and Russia (113.8).
“India may stand to loose its competitive advantages against the other countries in long term if corrective measures are not taken to strengthen the Indian education system qualitatively,” Assocham President Sajjan Jindal said.
The study was carried out on the basis of 20 parameters related to primary, secondary, tertiary and higher education and demography, the chamber said.
“The analysis revealed that the primary education in India is highly under-developed as compared to the other emerging nations,” it said.
However, the only silver lining, as per the survey was that India enjoys a better ranking in quality of education at higher levels.
