Explosion in northern Pakistan leaves 16 killed

Islamabad : At least sixteen people were killed and 12 others were wounded in a bomb explosion Sunday in a Pakistani northern district, said police.

A remote-controlled bomb, planted in a school building, exploded with a huge bang in Boneer area of Sawat district, police sources told KUNA.

At the time of explosion, polling for by-elections was underway and a large number of people had gathered to cast their votes.

The explosion killed at least sixteen people and wounded 12 others, said sources, adding that the school building was badly damaged.

Sources feared further rise in the death toll saying several wounded were in critical condition.

A local news channel meanwhile reported that the explosion wounded more than twenty people. The Prime Minister, President, and other political leaders have strongly condemned the blast and directed the authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the incident.
