Chandigarh : Local traders Monday threatened to go on an indefinite strike from Wednesday if barricades and checkpoints put up at entry points of the vegetables and grain market here are not removed.
Representatives of various market associations also joined the grain market committee Monday to raise slogans against Chandigarh administrator S.F. Rodrigues.
“The administration says the checkpoints are being put up because of security concerns but there never has been any incident of stealing or violence here. Moreover, nobody consulted the market committee officials,” grain market committee director Jujhar Singh Badheri said.
“The administrator is trying to bully traders and is unnecessarily interfering in the market’s functioning,” Badheri added.
The vegetables and grain market at sector 26 is one of the biggest in the region. Over 500 licensed traders ply their business from here while around 25,000 people are directly associated with it.
The development comes at a time when prices of vegetables and essential commodities are expected to soar in the wake of the nationwide truckers’ strike. No truck carrying vegetables arrived at the market Monday.
