Ranchi : Fans of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Tuesday formally lodged a police complaint against unidentified people after his family recieved an extortion letter.
“We have lodged an FIR (first information report) against unknown persons threatening Dhoni’s family and seeking Rs.5 million in extortion,” Jitendra Singh, president of the Dhoni Fan Club here, told IANS.
Singh handed over a complaint to K.N Chaudhary, officer in charge of the Doranda police station here.
IANS Sunday reported that no FIR was lodged after the family recieved the threat letter. “We came to know through media reports that no FIR was lodged. So we decided to lodge a formal FIR,” said Singh.
The family of Dhoni, among the most popular sports icons in the country, received two letters last week from ‘Taslim’ who claimed to be a close associate of absconding underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
While the first letter demanded Rs.5 million, the other threatened to blow up his home if the money was not paid and the police were approached.
Police officer Chaudhary earlier said: “The Hatia assistant superintendent of police (ASP) is investigation the case. Any action, including filing of FIR, will be based on the investigation report.”
The Jharkhand government has provided the highest ‘Z-category’ security cover to Dhoni following the threat, putting 45 personnel on the job.
