Berlin : Shimon Peres, president of Israeli regime, said while the German government has always been Israeli staunch supporter, Germans at large remain very critical of the regime’s policies.
Speaking with the German pro-Israel daily Welt newspaper, Peres added, “We have best relations with the government in Germany, however among the people there are strong reservations.”
He acknowledged that it was a “problem” that many European countries regard Israel as a troublemaker.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is seen as one of the most pro-Israeli chancellors in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany which interestingly enough comes in the wake of a drastic German public opinion shift against Israel, triggered by its brutal military actions in Lebanon and Gaza.
Past German opinion polls indicated also that both the US and Israel remain the greatest threat to global peace.
Germans overwhelmingly opposed Israel’s military onslaught in Israel and Gaza in the summer of 2006.
Some 75 percent of Germans rejected Israel’s savage military actions, while only 12 percent backed the military offensive of the illegal Jewish state.
