New Delhi : Six men have been arrested here for duping state-owned Syndicate Bank of Rs.9 million by stealing and forging bank drafts, police said Wednesday.
According to police, the scam started a man named Lalit Kumar stealing a booklet containing 50 blank bank drafts from the Dwarka branch of the bank in February.
Kumar, who used to work as electrician in the bank, sold the booklet to his friend Harjit Singh for Rs.500 per draft. Singh, in turn, sold them to Raj Kumar Gupta for Rs.1,000 each.
Gupta, who is facing several cases of burglary, theft, possessing illegal firearms, cheating and attempt to murder, allegedly encashed 45 drafts in collusion with Rakesh Chauhan, Rajesh Aggarwal, Hakim Singh and Akhil Mukherjee by opening various accounts across the country.
Barring Aggarwal, the other men were arrested when a trap was laid after receiving s tip-off that they would be gathering near the Paras Cinema in Nehru Place.
“During interrogation, they revealed that they had bought a dozen laptop computers with the forged bank drafts and were planning to buy many Rolex watches,” Deputy Commissioner of Police A.S. Cheema said.
“We have recovered many laptops and some stolen bank drafts from them and are also trying to recover the remaining part of the amount they have encashed,” he added.
A search is on to nab Aggarwal.
