Srinagar : The strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for vehicular traffic Sunday following fresh snowfall at many places on the only surface link that joins the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.
“Following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions, the movement of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway was suspended today (Sunday),” a traffic department official said.
Snowfall was reported from Banihal and Qazigund areas of the 300-km-long stretch that serves as a life line for the Kashmir Valley.
However, authorities say sufficient amount of essential commodities have been stocked in the valley.
“There are sufficient stocks of essential supplies including petrol, diesel, kerosene, rations etc in the valley,” a divisional administration official said.
“We have kept snow clearance machines ready for any eventuality,” the official said.
Srinagar and most parts of the valley were lashed by rains during the night and moderate snowfall was reported from higher reaches adding to the chill factor.
“The weather is likely to improve from Monday,” a weather official told IANS.
