Amritsar : A newly married couple was shot dead in a Punjab town Sunday – the day the police received orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court that they were to be protected.
The victims, Balkar Singh and Rajinder Kaur, were shot dead separately in Tarn Taran town, 50 km from here, by unidentified assailants. Both belonged to villages in the border district of Tarn Taran district.
The couple got married against the wishes of their respective families Jan 1 this year. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the Punjab police to provide them protection.
Singh was shot dead in a market. The assailants, who came in a jeep, then went to his house.
Kaur, who was in the house, tried to flee, but she too was shot dead.
Police officials rushed to the spot and said that the double murder was being investigated. No one has been arrested so far.
