Bangladesh: Speakers suggest task force to find ways to cope with world economic meltdown

Dhaka, Bangladesh : Speakers at a seminar on Saturday opined that experts, academics and all stakeholders should work together to find out the ways how Bangladesh can take preparations to cope with the present world’s economic melt-down.

They also stressed on forming a task force involving all stakeholders to face the global economic recession, which severely affected the United States and the Europe and taking
steps for increasing revenue income and flow of remittance to face the possible challenges.

They expressed the views while speaking at a seminar organissed by RAPPORT Bangladesh Limited on “Global Financial Crisis and Our Preparedness to Face the Challenges” at HotelSummer Palace here on Saturday morning.

Industries Minister Dilip Barua was the chief guest while Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury and 2nd Vice- President of BGMEA Md Shahidul Islam were special guests with Vice-Chancellor of North-South UniversityProf Dr Hafiz G A Siddiqi in the chair.

Chairman and Managing Director of the organisation Dr M Moshrraf Hossain gave address of welcome while Chairman of Finance Department of Dhaka University Dr Mahmood Osman Imam presented key-note paper.

Dilip Barua said that the present world economic scenario would not pose any big negative impact on the country’s economy as it has a huge domestic market of over 15 crore people and low cost labour force.

“The negative impacts of world economic recession would not touch Bangladesh if we can achieve capacity to fulfil domestic demand because we have a low labour force that can help export local products to international markets in a low cost,” he added.

In these connections, Dilip Barua underscored the need for taking a comprehensive policy and fixing mind-set to cope with the situation by increasing local products as per need of the international markets.

He called upon the members of civil society, entrepreneurs, industrialists and other stakeholders to work together to face the challenges the world is facing in the wake of current economic melt-down.

Hafiz Siddique emphasized on constituting a task force involving all stakeholders to identify the ways how Bangladesh can face the present world’s economic situation.

He said that Bangladesh has to increase revenue income and foreign remittance to this end.

Zaglul Chowdhury said, the global economic crisis shattered economy of many nations across the world including the most powerful United States of America. Describing it as a severe crisis in the global economic history, he said, Bangladesh should
find out how it could face the challenges in future.

In this connection, the noted journalist who is also an analyst on international affairs recommended formulation of a policy involving all stakeholders including government
representatives, business leaders, experts and academics to find the way how Bangladesh can face the challenges of world economic recession.
