Talking to IRNA, he said that Iran’s nuclear programme according to the evidence available is peaceful and its aims and objectives are not to develop nuclear weapons.

“Iran has right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful means and no body can deny it”, added Syed Qandil Abbas.

He was of the view that Iran has been fully cooperating with IAEA and is giving its inspectors full facilities of inspection but ‘in my view IEAE is not cooperating with Iran’. He opined that if Iran’s programme is peaceful so they must be allowed to develop it.

Commenting on the statements of UN atomic watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei, Syed Qandil Abbas said ElBarade has been issuing statements on Iran’s nuclear programmes, sometimes he says that Iran’s nuclear programme is peaceful and sometimes he says that Iran is not cooperating with them, “which in my view shows that IEAE dose not want to see Iran as a nuclear power”.

Syed Qandil Abbas said that the recent statement of ElBarade that Iran has failed to provide any clarification about the dimension of its nuclear programme, is just to check the Iranian reaction as the new American administration wants to get an overview of Iranians sentiments to their nuclear program.

He said that Iran has signed the NPT and they have assured the world that they are not going after the nuclear weapon yet the nuclear enrichment of Iran is suspicious.

He was of the view that Iran is handling the issue very tactfully and has repeatedly said that it is not after nuclear weapons.

Iran has faced three sets of UN Security Council sanctions over its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment activities but Iran, a leading OPEC oil producer, denies it is seeking nuclear weapons and says it aims to provide energy for its growing population when its reserves of fossil fuels run out.
