New Delhi : ICC President-elect Sharad Pawar, who would be at the helm during the 2011 World Cup to be staged by Asian nations, today admitted that the terror attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore would make it difficult for Pakistan to remain a co-host for the mega event.
“It’s really shocking that cricket has been targetted,” Pawar said.
“We might get a communication from many countries’ participants whether they will play there or they will not play. That will affect our entire programme,” he said.
At least six Sri Lankan cricketers were injured when armed terrorists opened fire at the team bus killing five police personnel escorting the team to the Gaddafi stadium for the third day of the second Test.
The injured cricketers include captain Mahela Jayawardene, his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis and Thilan Samaraweera.
Pawar, who is a former BCCI President, said he would be meeting the ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat and the members of co-hosts — Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to take stock of the situation.
