Hyderabad : The ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh swept the elections to the state legislative council by winning five out of nine seats which went to polls March 30.
The Congress candidates were declared elected in five local authority constituencies of the council. The main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) bagged one seat while the results from the remaining constituencies are awaited.
The Congress candidates were elected in Mahabubnagar, Medak, Visakhapatnam, Warangal and Nalgonda districts. TDP candidate won the election in Khammam district.
The elected Congress candidates are: D.V. Suryanarayana Raju (Visakhapatnam), N. Vidya Sagar (Nalgonda), V. Bhoopal Reddy (Medak), S. Jagadeeswera Reddy (Mahabubnagar) and K. Muralidhar Rao (Warangal).
The representatives of the local bodies elected the council members.
The council results will be a morale booster for the Congress, which is seeking to retain power.
Elections to 294-member state assembly and 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state are scheduled to be held in two phases April 16 and 23.
