London : More than 100,000 people marched through London Saturday to protest the Sri Lankan military offensive in the Tamil-dominated Northeastern region of the island-nation.
The massive demonstration came as a Tamil protester suspended a hunger strike in front of the British parliament, saying he had agreed to drink water after being promised he would be able to take part in United Nations talks on the Sri Lankan situation.
Sivatharsan Sivakumaraval was one of two hunger strikers who had set up camp outside the parliament but agreed to suspend his action in order to travel to the UN headquarters in New York City with Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes, the Guardian reported.
Hughes is among several British MPs who have been protesting the Sri Lankan army action.
While police said 100,000 people participated in the march, organisers said the figure was closer to 200,000.
