Re-polling on in 29 Andhra booths

Hyderabad : Re-polling was underway Saturday in 29 booths in Andhra Pradesh where voting was stopped due to violence or marred by faulty voting machines and errors by election staff Thursday.

The re-poll began at 7 a.m. and will end at 4 p.m. Election officials said 30 percent turnout was recorded in the first four hours.

Re-polling is being held in 17 booths in Aiza village in Alampur assembly segment of Nagarkurnool Lok Sabha constituency. While 15 booths wore a deserted look, two recorded 30 percent polling.

Locals had attacked polling booths and destroyed electronic voting machines after the police arrested a man asking people to boycott the election.

The residents of Aiza have been protesting their inclusion in Alampur constituency after the delimitation process and their petition against the Election Commission’s move is pending in the Supreme Court.

Re-poll was also on in 12 other polling booths, including one each in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Warangal, Khammam and Srikakulam Lok Sabha constituencies.

In Bahadurpura assembly segment of Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) activists attacked the car of Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Mir Ahmed Ali with eggs.

Polling for 22 Lok Sabha and 154 assembly constituencies in Telangana and north coastal Andhra was held in the first phase Thursday.

Poll officials said 69.75 percent of 31.2 million voters cast their votes in the first phase.
