The award will be managed jointly with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a US-based educational and scientific society. Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the IT major will fund the award.

“We wanted to work with ACM to recognise research contributions made over time in innovation. The game plan is to identify breakthroughs in scientific or engineering methodology. The award is aimed at inspiring students to consider career in computing science,” Infosys chief executive officer S. Gopalakrishnan said.

The potential winners will be shortlisted for their innovative products spanning computing applications, computer architecture, theory and practice, education and software.

“The ACM Infosys Foundation award will help advance computing science by recognising and honouring young scientists and system developers whose innovations will have a dramatic impact in the field. The first recipient will be announced by early 2008,” ACM president Stuart I. Feldman said in a statement from New York.

A selection committee, headed by Cornell University engineering professor Juris Harmanis, will administer the award.
