Tehran : Some 69 tons of saffron worth dlrs 91.6 million were exported during March 2008-March 2009.
The figure indicates a 9-percent decrease compared to the previous year.
The Iranian comodity was exported to Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, France, India and Japan.
Iran produces 96 percent of the world’s saffron and has the highest quality across the globe.
Saffron, botanical name crocus sativus, is the most expensive spice in the world.
Derived from the dried stigmas of the purple saffron crocus, it takes anything from 70,000 to 250,000 flowers to make one pound of saffron.
