New Delhi : Union Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar has been given one-year extension, the government announced Monday. Chandrasekhar will be in office for one more year beginning June 13.
The decision to extend Chandrasekhar’s tenure appears to have been taken to maintain continuity and keep up the momentum in the implementation of various key social sector programmes initiated by the government, said a senior bureaucrat.
Chandrasekar, who was earlier the revenue secretary, is a 1970 batch Kerala cadre officer and assumed charge of the key post in 2007 for a two-year tenure.
Following the cabinet secretary’s extension, the government will also have to take a call on the replacement for Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, who retires June 30.
Gupta, a 1971 batch officer, is completing his three-month extension, given because of the elections.
Another key position to be filled is that of the defence secretary as incumbent Vijay Singh is retiring in July.
