Srinagar : Sheikh Mustaffa Kamal, National Conference leader and younger brother of party patron Farooq Abdullah, Sunday won the Hazratbal assembly by-poll defeating his nearest Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival.
Kamal polled 8,066 votes to beat PDP’s Asiya Naqash by 1,066 votes, officials said. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of Farooq Abdullah before his election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.
The by-election was held June 3. Of the 82,677 voters, only 20 percent exercised their franchise. The counting of votes was held Sunday morning.
