Mumbai: In protest to the Doha agreement the Movement For Peace and Justice (MPJ) of Maharashtra and Jamaat-e-Islami held a dharna on Friday at Azad Maidan.
The protestors demanded that the Indian government, prior to taking further action in this regard, should analyze every aspect of this ‘so-called undisclosed agreement’ which they said ‘undermines the agriculture sector of India and jeopardizes the future of the Indian farmers.’ They also demanded negotiation under Doha round of talk to continue and farmers get their due justice.
‘The happiness of Indian farmers will guarantee the pleasure of other citizens and it will pave way to progress. We all support the voice raised by MPJ,’ said Aslam Ghazi, the secretary of Maharashtra Jamaat-e-Islami.
Nearly 75% citizens will feel the negative effects of the agreement which will push the country one century behind. And it will be an addition to the atrocities on the farmers. The MPJ Maharashtra president Muhammad Siraj said that UPA has little interest in ensuring the welfare of people.
Rashid Azeem of MPJ said that the farmers in America get 80% subsidy while the Indian farmers find only 8%. In case Doha agreement is adopted the farmers already reeling under debts will either commit suicide or will adopt other occupations which ultimately will harm the country.
According to the Doha agreement India’s industrial tariff, which are above 30 will come down to below 13 per cent or less.
