Nature of India-Pakistan dialogue yet to be decided: Manmohan

Sharm el-Sheikh : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday said the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan will meet and discuss the nature of dialogue between the two countries in the future and will review action against terrorism.

Manmohan Singh also made it clear that another Mumbai-like terrorist attack will affect dialogue of any kind.

The nature of the dialogue will be discussed by the foreign secretaries, Manmohan Singh told reporters here after his talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit here.

Manmohan Singh’s remarks indicate that the present format of composite dilaogue that focuses on eight bilteral issues including Jammu and Kashmit and security may be modified to address India’s central concerns over cross-border terrorism.

“I told Pakistan PM that the acts like Mumbai should not happen ever again,” Manmohan Singh said.

“Dekhiye, dialogue ke siway koi chara nahin hai (There is no alternative to dialogue),” Manmohan Singh said, indicating India’s willingness to continue engaging with Pakistan.

The two leaders held talks for nearly two hours which focused on terrorism. At the end of the talks, the two countries said in a joint statement that terrorism is the main threat affecting them and sought to delink compsoite dialogue from action on terror.
