Ramesh Kumar, who had migrated to Italy in 2007 and worked in a timber factory in Milan, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the banks of a river July 28.

“We are feeling very helpless as we do not know the procedure to bring back our son’s body to India. He was murdered in Italy and we were informed about this by one of our relatives residing there,” Kumar’s father Madan Lal, a small-time businessman here, said Wednesday.

“Our relative told us that Kumar had left his home for work but did not return in time and police informed them about his murder. Now police officials are saying they will not hand over his body till the investigation is over,” Lal said.

Kumar was the eldest of four siblings. He has two younger sisters and a younger brother.

“We appeal to the Indian government to ensure a fair trial there and help us in bringing back the body to India. We will also meet Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur, who is an elected MP from our area, to seek her personal intervention in this matter,” Lal added.

Derabassi town is around 20 km from state capital Chandigarh.
