New Delhi : Be it the music, the flavour on the palette or the feel of the fabric – everything that can be seen, heard or felt at London’s premier Regent Street Sep 2 will be very much Indian.
The Regent Street Festival will bring a slice of India to the heart of London as part of the ongoing India Now campaign being organised by the Mayor of London.
The three-month long campaign, which highlights India’s contribution in the field of culture, showcases its rich tradition and new trends in the fields of art, film, theatre, food, fashion and music. It started in July and will culminate in September.
The Regent Street Festival, which is a one-day event, will have London’s premier shopping street wear the look of an Indian lane. India’s Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni will attend the mega event.
Activities on that day will include music and dance performances, a food quarter with three restaurant areas serving Indian cuisine, Indian market stalls selling spices, herbs, silks, arts and crafts, various competitions and food sampling, among others.
Over 150 cultural organisations from London are participating in this event. The India Now campaign is the biggest festival of India to be staged in Britain, with activities planned across London for the entire season.
Britain is one of the most important source markets for India, with over 700,000 tourists from Britain visiting India in 2006, an increase of 12.8 percent compared to the previous year.
At least 10,00,000 people from London and outside are expected to participate in the festival celebrating India.
