Srinagar: To curb the menace of suicide among the Kashmiri youth, a private social organization held a special programme series namely Sukoon, which was held today at SKICC, Srinagar.
Nasir Aslam Wani, Minister of state (MoS), Dr. Amit Wanchoo, SSP CID Jammu, Syed Afadul Mujtaba and child psychiatrist in Germany, Dr. Christen Jacob were a number of dignitaries who shared the dais with the famous Bollywood actress Nandita Das who is a Social Activist besides a Film Maker.
The program was in two phases in which Sukoon, a campaign against suicide among Kashmiri youngsters was the first session and in second phase program Kashmir women leadership awards-2009
While speaking on the topic Nandita Das said that “I am in Kashmir after twenty five years, I have fuzzy memories about those days, but still Kashmir is beautiful as it was.”
While answering a question she said that we cannot force a film maker or any body to make films on women particularly, but we can make them aware for this cause”
SSP CID Jammu S.A. Mujtaba said that “there could be so many reasons of suicide, but the real fact is that we have to take steps to curb it,”.
He also said that “as a police officer I must say to some extent people are not fully supporting us as whenever a police officer go to investigate a suicide case, their families says it is not good to express to society,”.
The interaction program was held in which audiences and experts exchanged question and answers and participants came to conclusion that if a person is in depression which leads, to their suicide attempt, should be given psychological treatment to help.
Child psychologist, Christen Jacob, gave particular information about post traumatic stress disorder. She said “To get out of these situations which could lead a person to the suicide point is only to discuss or express your feeling with that kind of person who could help you out like a psychiatrist or a psychological counselor or your friend”
Meanwhile after commencing the first phase, other program was organized namely Kashmir women leadership awards in which a number of dignified women were awarded who have gave their full expertise to the society and which have got a good response from the society too”.
