People jump on to tracks at Noida Metro station

New Delhi : Hundreds of curious passers-by thronged the Noida City Centre Metro station Thursday afternoon and even moved on to Metro tracks posing serious doubts on security issues, barely an hour after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati flagged off the Metro’s Noida link.

Looking jubilant and waving at the TV cameras, people teemed the Metro platform and jumped over the tracks – a dangerous violation of security measures – even as security personnel helplessly stood by trying to control the jostling crowds.

The Noida section of the Delhi Metro, although inaugurated Thursday, will open to public and become functional Friday on.

“People were curious as Metro services were not functioning Thursday. They came near the Metro station and tracks but were dispersed off immediately,” said an official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

However, the situation posed serious security doubts despite the assurances given by the Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan earlier in the day.

Sreedharan said that the security on the extended Metro link will be taken care of by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), just like it does in Delhi.
