A meeting of four Left parties, led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), finalised the note here Thursday. The government is expected to respond to their note by Monday.

The Left, which supports Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s coalition government from outside, has opposed the nuclear deal, saying that the provisions in the Hyde Act, passed by the US Congress, would have implications on India’s foreign policy and its indigenous nuclear development.

In its first meeting Tuesday of the 15-member UPA-Left committee, set up specially to sort out the differences between the UPA and the Left parties on the contentious nuclear deal, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is the committee convenor, is believed to have submitted a two-page document on the implications of the proposed 123 agreement and the Hyde Act on the country’s foreign policy.

The panel, which has scheduled its second meeting Sep 19, would discuss the implications of the Hyde Act and the 123 agreement on the country’s self-reliance in nuclear energy.
