Taliban spokesman captured by Afghan police

Kabul, Sep 27 (Xinhua) Afghan police captured one of the Taliban spokesmen in the southern Helmand province, the interior ministry said in a statement Thursday.

“In an operation in Sufian village Wednesday afternoon, the police arrested Yousuf Ahmadi along with his brother,” the statement said.

A vehicle, two motorbikes, one satellite phone and one mobile phone were also seized, it added.

Ahmadi had been the main spokesman of the Taliban from an unknown location during the kidnapping and captivity of 23 South Koreans from July to August in the central Ghazni province.

He is the third Taliban spokesman who was arrested over the past two years in Afghanistan. The other two were Abdul Latif Hakimi and Hanif.

Hakimi was exchanged for a kidnapped Italian journalist this March, while Hanif is still in custody.

Taliban militants have yet to make any comment over Ahmadi’s reported arrest.
