New York : Congress president Sonia Gandhi will Tuesday address the UN General Assembly (UNGA) when it formally declares Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary as International Day of Non-Violence.
Gandhi, accompanied by her son and newly appointed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, arrived here Sunday night.
The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson in her address at the UNGA at around 9 a.m. will speak about the relevance of the Gandhian ideals of non-violence, peace and brotherhood in a world, which continues to be ridden by conflict.
The UNGA decided in June to observe Oct 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence and urged member-states to observe it every year in an appropriate manner.
Gandhi is also scheduled to address NRIs Monday evening at a reception organised in her honour by the Indian National Overseas Congress at Hotel Marriot Marquis at Time Square in Manhattan.
