Delhi moves to issue identification numbers

New Delhi: The Delhi government Wednesday said it had signed a pact with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to start rolling out identification numbers for residents in the city.

Stressing the need for proper monitoring of the exercise, Delhi Revenue Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with UIDAI Monday.

Two committees have been set up to oversee its implementation.

One committee will be a state-level council headed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and will include revenue and finance ministers besides the chief secretary.

The other committee, constituted to oversee the implementation of the project, has chief secretary as its chairman.

The revenue department has been declared the nodal department, while the divisional commissioner will be the nodal officer.

The minister said the city government collaborated with UIDAI to enhance efficiency in delivery of governmental benefits and services through accurate identification of beneficiaries

The first batch of unique identification (UID) numbers will be rolled out in India between August 2010 and February 2011.
