New Delhi : The Indian Railways have contributed 92 members to the Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games beginning Sunday, a statement said Friday.
The railway complement, comprising 46 men and women each — and perhaps the biggest Indian squad from any single organisation of the country, would be competing in a dozen disciplines.
The female participants, vying for medals in the Games, are 23 athletes, two archers, one diver, two shooters, two cyclists, 12 hockey players, one netball player and three weightlifters.
The male players comprise 15 athletes, three divers, five swimmers, seven cyclists, five boxers, eight wrestlers, two gymnasts and one weightlifter.
In the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia, railway players won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals in different individual events, the statement said.
The women’s hockey team which comprised players mostly from the railways also won the gold medal at this edition, the statement said, adding that the railway players have been winning medals regularly since 1966 in all the Commonwealth Games, both in individual and team events, except in 1986.
