New Delhi : The National Commission for Women (NCW) Friday demanded that amendments to the Prohibition of Indecent Representation of Women and Children Act be passed promptly so that there is stringent monitoring of content on electronic media.
Reacting to the public outrage on reality shows like “Big Boss” and “Rakhi ka Insaaf”, Girija Vyas, chairperson of NCW, said only a stringent law can regulate TV content.
“We appeal to the government to pass (amendments to) the Prohibition of Indecent Representation of Women and Children Act immediately so that there will be a regulatory authority to control shows like the ones which are on air now,” Vyas told reporters here.
She said the commission has reviewed the original act of 1986 and drafted amendments to broaden the definition of “indecent representation” and expand its scope to include electronic and digital media and make punishments stringent.
The government Wednesday directed Colors and Imagine TV channels to telecast reality shows – “Bigg Boss” and “Rakhi Ka Insaaf” – only after 11 p.m., following complaints of vulgarity.
However, the Bombay High Court Thursday stayed the decision till Monday.
