Players from 13 nations in action at ITF women’s meet

Kolkata: Players from 13 countries including India will vie for honours in the US$ 10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Women’s International tournament to be held here Jan 24-29.

Slovakia’s Dalila Jakupovic, ranked 395, has got the top billing, followed by Mari Tanaka of Japan – 462, and Nicoel Clarico of Italy (475). The tournament will be held at the Jaidip Mukerjea Tennis Academy.

Six Indians including Poojashree Venkatesh, old warhorse Rushmi Chakraborty, Isha Lakhani and the talented Shivika Burman feature in the list of 18 players who have confirmed their participation in the tourney, where the singles winner will get $1,568, with the team bagging the doubles crown getting richer by $637.

The final players’ list would be clear Friday, when the sign-in takes place.

Apart from 24 direct entries, there will be four wild cards and four others would come through from the qualifiers to be played Jan 22 and Jan 23, former Davis Cupper Jaidip Mukerjea told mediapersons here.

The wild cards are yet to be decided.

On the chances of the Indian players, Mukerjea said: “I expect Isha Lakhani to do well.”
