New Delhi: Two years before she turns 100, Homai Vyarawalla, India’s first woman photo-journalist, was Tuesday named among the 32 women for the civilian Padma awards in the fields of art, culture, trade and social work.
Actors Waheeda Rehman, Tabu and Kajol and banker Chanda Kochar figure in the list of 128 Padma awardees.
Gujarat-based Homai Vyarawalla will receive the Padma Vibhushan, the nation’s second highest civilian award, in art and photography category.
Vyarawalla started her press photography career in 1938, for over a period of 35 years till 1973.
She has captured the World War II, India’s freedom struggle leading up to independence and subsequently the hectic events during the time of prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Culture czarina Kapila Vatsyayan has also been named for the nation’s second highest civilian award for her work in art and art promotion.
