Speaking to reporters here, Chennithala said his prime concern was to lead the party to victory.

“The decision if I have to contest or not has to be made by the party high command. I will abide by the decision that comes from the top,” he said.

Chennithala has had a reasonably successful reign as the state Congress chief since taking over in 2005 after his party was routed in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

He is the longest serving state unit head in recent history, and led the party to victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls and three assembly by-elections. Last October, the Congress-led United Democratic Front tasted one of its best ever victories in the local body elections.

Chennithala, 54, was elected twice to the Kerala assembly and four times to the Lok Sabha. However, he lost the 2004 polls and since then, has stayed away from electoral politics.

Elections for the 140-member house will be held April 13.
