Obama signs condolences book at Japanese embassy

Washington : US President Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to the Japanese embassy in Washington Thursday to sign a book of condolences to the victims of last week’s earthquake and tsunami.

Obama in brief remarks again called it a “heart-breaking” tragedy and said the US was willing to provide any assistance to the Japanese as they work to recover from the ongoing disaster.

“I am confident that Japan will rebuild,” Obama said.

The president was due to make more remarks later Thursday on the disaster and the ongoing threat of a nuclear meltdown at a power plant in the country’s northeast.
