Mumbai: The Supreme Court Monday extended the Enforcement Directorate’s custodial remand of alleged money launderer and tax evader Hasan Ali Khan for three more days, his lawyer said.
“We got the notice of the extension of his remand this (Monday) evening and his custody to the ED was extended for three days,” I.P. Bagaria, Khan’s lawyer in Mumbai, told IANS.
A division bench of Justices Altaf Alam and R.N. Lodha passed the order on an application filed by the ED.
Santosh Paul, Khan’s lawyer in Delhi, told IANS that the ED had requested for seven-day custody in a fresh application.
“They were granted a three-day custody following arguments from the defence,” he added.
Following the Supreme Court stay on Khan’s bail, he had surrendered to the ED Thursday.
The apex court had stayed a Mumbai court’s order granting bail to Khan, granting his immediate custody to the ED for four days which ended Monday.
The court said it was doing so in the face of extraordinary situations and the complexity involved in the money laundering cases against Khan.
The Supreme Court had also expressed its bewilderment over the detailed order of Mumbai’s Principal Sessions Judge M.L. Tahilyani refusing the ED’s custodial interrogation of Khan and granting him bail.
