Bareilly/Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) : Sportswoman Arunima Sinha, who lost her leg after being thrown off a train by robbers, has desired to set up a sports academy for poor children and youths, one of her family members said.
“Arunima wants to help aspiring sportspersons, particularly those from poor families, in achieving their dreams,” Arunima’s cousin Satyendra told reporters in Bareilly, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“She wishes to set up a sports academy that would offer training to poor sportspersons,” he said.
“She even expressed the desire to set up the sports academy through the financial assistance she has been receiving from various government and non-government agencies,” he added.
Arunima was pushed out of the general compartment of Padmawati Express near Bareilly for resisting a chain-snatching attempt by some hoodlums while travelling from Lucknow to Delhi late Monday.
She lost her left leg when it came under the wheels of another train passing on the parallel rail track.
Railway police carried her to the local district hospital where she lay injured, traumatised and unconscious until Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, Arunima was Saturday shifted from the district hospital in Bareilly to the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) in Lucknow for further treatment.
She was admitted to the CSMMU’s trauma centre Saturday afternoon.
“We shifted her to Lucknow as facilities pertaining to prosthetic leg are not available in the Bareilly hospital,” Vijay Yadav, a doctor with Bareilly’s district hospital, told reporters.
