New Delhi: The Congress Tuesday expressed regret over the killing of a person in protests against a nuclear plant in Maharashtra but wondered if these were being fuelled by “imaginary concerns”.

“The death of a person in police firing is always regrettable,” party spokesman Manish Tiwari told reporters here.

“What has to be seen is whether the agitation is based on some real concerns or (if) completely imaginary concerns are being stoked by vested interests,” he added.

Tiwari said that India’s energy requirements were going to rise manifold as the country seeks a 10 percent growth rate. Nuclear energy was a vital part of the energy mix the country needed, he pointed out.

One person was killed and at least seven people were injured Monday when police opened fire on a mob protesting the proposed 9,900 MW nuclear plant at Jaitapur.
