Chennai : Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK has convened a meeting of its top leadership Wednesday to chalk out its strategy in the wake of the CBI chargesheeting Kanimozhi, its Rajya Sabha Member and daughter of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the party chief. Kanimozhi was named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday as a co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam.
The CBI also chargesheeted Sharad Kumar, managing director of Kalaignar TV, as a co-conspirator in the case involving 2G spectrum allocation after it traced Rs.214 crore as an illegal money trail.
The party is upset, which was evident with its officials remaining silent Tuesday.
This is the second meeting of the DMK leadership in two months.
In March the DMK had convened a meeting of its leadership when the party decided to snap its seven year alliance with the Congress and asked its ministers to quit the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
The DMK then decided to provide only “issue-based support” to the Congress-led government.
The stated reason for the split followed the Congress’ insistence on contesting 63 of the 234 Tamil Nadu seats in the DMK-led alliance.
Karunanidhi had publicly described the demand as “unjustified”.
However with Congress standing firm, the DMK blinked first and agreed to the demand.
While speculations are being made about the DMK taking a tough stance against Congress in the wake of the CBI move against Kanimozhi, members of the alliance do not forsee any such drastic action.
“The alliance is strong and will continue. There may not be any change in DMK-Congress alliance,” G.K. Mani, president of PMK, a DMK ally, told IANS.
Political commentator Cho Ramaswamy had said: “The DMK has to digest this. It cannot afford offending the central government. They need the support of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.”
The party has contested in only 119 constituencies in the April 13 assembly polls and needs the support of the Congress in the event of a favourable outcome.
