Superintendent of Police Pratibha Ambedkar said a case had been registered against K.P. Singh of Ma Srinagar Hospital following the death of Manisha.

The doctor has been charged with causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent. Later he was also slapped with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

His house and hospital are to be attached, Ambedkar said, adding a police team had been set up to arrest him.

Manisha died in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of S.N. Medical College Friday.

According to police, K.P. Singh carried out an operation for abortion but damaged her intestines and womb. To save her life, her intestines were taken out.

But when her blood loss could not be stopped, she was moved to Vidhyawati Nursing Home and then to Krishna Nursing Home and later to the Pushpanjali Hospital before finally landing at the medical college where she died.

The case had generated a lot of anger in Agra. Women’s groups have held noisy demonstrations over the past one week. Her death Friday sparked off more protests.

The Agra administration has raided illegally run nursing homes. The Uttar Pradesh health department has sealed some nursing homes. A large number of quacks have bolted.

The Agra chapter of the Indian Medical Association has asked for stringent measures against quacks masquerading as doctors.

K.P. Singh has reportedly moved a bail application in a court here.
