The Qingdao Bay bridge in Shandong province will open to automobiles in June, officials told Xinhua. Construction had begun in 2007.

The bridge has so far cost nine billion yuan (around $1.4 billion).

On completion, it will shorten the route between Qingdao port city and Huangdao district by 30 km, cutting travel time down to around 20 minutes.

Currently, the longest sea-link bridge in use in the world is the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway bridge in New Orleans, US, which is around 38.4 km.

The longest sea bridge in China at present is the 36 km long Hangzhou Bay bridge that connects Jiaxing and Ningbo in Zhejiang province.
