Rangasamy sworn in, announces 25 kg free rice for poor

Puducherry: May 16 (IANS) Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, 60, who assumed office Monday, has ordered the supply of 25 kg free rice to families below the poverty level (BPL).

The new government also increased the old age pension to Rs.1,000 from Rs.750.

Earlier in the day, Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh administered oath of office and secrecy to Rangasamy, the leader of All India NR Congress (AINRC) party, at a function at Raj Nivas.

No other minister was sworn in along with Rangasamy.

The two-month old AINRC fought the assembly elections aligning with the AIADMK for the 30-member house.

The AINRC won 15 seats out of the 17 it contested with Rangasamy winning from two constituencies.

The AIADMK won five seats, taking the alliance tally to 20.

A former Congressman, Rangasamy was the chief minister of the union territory from 2001 to 2008.
