Srinagar : The ruling National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday castigated senior Congress leader Makhan Lal Fotedar for his remarks on the accession of the state to India and also on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
In a hard-hitting statement issued here, the party claimed that Fotedar had been “hatching conspiracies in New Delhi against the sincere leadership of the NC” and that the Congress is a divided house in the state.
Senior NC legislator and Omar’s uncle Mustafa Kamal told IANS: “Fotedar is an alien to J and K politics, but his attribute has been that he hatched conspiracies in the past right from 1977 to 1990 toppling elected governments four times by imposition of governor’s rule.
“He works in tandem with his confidant and friend Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to bring his conspiracies to fruition.”
Kamal called Fotedar’s statement on accession of the state to India being full and final as “ridiculous”.
Fotedar had two days back said in Srinagar that the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was “full and final” and that Omar Abdullah was not even born when the accession was signed.
Kamal also blamed the Congress for having betrayed the “sincerity of the NC in the past as well”.
He asserted that after agreeing to the terms of the 1975 accord, which brought Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah to power in 1977, the Congress had ditched the NC by withdrawing support to the government.
The senior NC leader also said the Congress had been speaking in confusing voices.
“Azad Sahib says something while Saif-ud-Din Soz says quite the opposite. They are a divided house and to keep their flock together the state Congress leaders are harping on the power tune now,” he said.
Kamal claimed that the present alliance with the Congress was a bitter one for the NC.
He also said that the alliance had been damaging the NC’s image in the Valley which has traditionally been the party’s political stronghold.
Reacting to Fotedar’s dig at Omar Abdullah that he was not born when the accession was signed, Kamal said: “Omar is an able, visionary and bold politician who has deep understanding of history. He knows that the state’s accession is conditional, conditions which are yet to be fulfilled.”
