Tokyo : US nuclear experts are expected to start disabling North Korean nuclear facilities Monday, according to American nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill.
The US team would start work on a spent-fuel reprocessing plant in Yongbyon after travelling to the nuclear complex Sunday, Hill said.
He also expected to see a list of North Korea’s nuclear programmes within two weeks.
North Korea promised Oct 3 to disable its 5-megawatt experimental reactor, reprocessing plant and nuclear fuel rod plant at the Yongbyon nuclear complex and submit the list of all its nuclear programmes by Dec 31.
It shut down the Yongbyon reactor and other key facilities in July as part of a six-nation agreement made in February to abandon its nuclear programme.
The disablement and declaration are required under a six-party agreement that grants North Korea energy aid and the normalisation of diplomatic ties with the US in return for abandoning its nuclear programme.
Hill arrived in Tokyo Friday after leaving China and South Korea to brief his Japanese counterparts Kenichiro Sasae and other Japanese officials.
