Need to spend more on healthcare for poor: Azad

New Delhi : Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Wednesday that there is a need to increase government spending on healthcare to help the poor.

“Increased public sector spending will help mitigate the problems faced by the poor, who often have to bear high expenses on the account of hospitalisation and purchase of drugs, due to unavailability of public health care services,” said Azad, in a statement issued here.

Azad said that the government has launched the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram scheme to provide cashless medical facilities to pregnant women and new borns at government health institutions in both rural and urban areas.
