Kolkata : The much deferred hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report on Nandigram began Wednesday with a division bench of the Calcutta High Court directing the West Bengal government to file a status report on the March 14 police firing by Thursday.
The high court bench comprising Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh asked Advocate General Balai Roy to place a report on Nandigram immediately before it.
While apologising, Roy told the court the report was not ready and sought a day’s time to file a status report on the March 14 police action that killed 14 people and injured many more.
The case would come up for further hearing Thursday.
“We would comply with the court order and submit a status report Thursday informing all the problems that the administration has been facing to enter trouble-torn Nandigram,” Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy said at state secretariat Writers’ Buildings.
Meanwhile, the chief justice also read out the last paragraph of the CBI report in the court room in which the federal agency said it was not possible for an investigating agency to reach a definite conclusion on a cause of the police firing.
The high court also heard the case relating to acquisition of land by Tata Motors in Singur Wednesday and directed the state government to file another report within next two weeks.
The court fixed the next hearing of land acquisition in Singur June 5.
