New Delhi : The Congress Sunday rejected Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s charge against Home Minister P. Chidambaram of “encouragaing indiscipline” among some police officers of Gujarat, and said finding truth behind the riots in 2002 was more important than disciplining the officers.
“The Gujarat chief minister for the last nine years has been obfuscating the issue. It needs to be given a serious thought as to what is more important – disciplining the officers or (finding the) truth of the massacre,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
Modi had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his direct intervention after Chidambaram’s remarks that if state officers invoke certain service rules, the central government will look into it.
The Gujarat government has suspended Indian Police Service officer Sanjiv Bhatt and charge sheeted another senior officer Rahul Sharma.
