“India’s commitment to the Palestinian cause is long established and India was the first non-Arab country to recognise the state of Palestine Nov 16, 1988, following Algeria’s declaration of Nov 15 that year,” Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said here Saturday.

“While we remain hopeful (that) the talks and negotiations will lead to peaceful process of final resolution of the Middle East conflict, India will support the resolution of Palestine seeking membership of the UN,” Mathai said while briefing the media on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly session Sep 22-26.

The US has said it would “veto” the resolution at the UN Security Council meet, arguing that any statehood recognition should come through bilateral negotiations with Israel.
