Kolkata, Nov 4 (IANS) Terming Trinamool Congress as an ally in the decision to deregulate petrol prices, West Bengal’s Left Front Friday said the Mamata Banerjee-led party was trying to “mislead” the people by registering its protest against the latest hike in petroleum prices.
“For the sake of profit of the oil companies, the Congress led UPA-II (United Progressive Alliance) had lifted the government’s control over petrol pricing. This decision was taken in the cabinet. It was supported by Trinamool Congress, DMK, NCP and others. Following this decision, the oil companies are repeatedly burdening the masses with hikes in oil prices,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said in a press statement.
“Now Trinamool Congress is protesting against the petrol price rise. What does this protest mean now? The daily lives of the masses have been hit for this price deregulation policy, which has been taken to promote profits for corporate houses. Now Trinamool is trying to mislead the people by saying different things,” said Bose.
The Left Front also called for mass protest against the hike.
Giving a virtual ultimatum, the Trinamool Congress Friday threatened to quit the UPA against “repeated unilateral decisions” to raise fuel and coal prices but Banerjee kept the decision pending and sought a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after his return from Cannes.
