The topic of the debate held in Hindi as well as English was “Adherence to human rights norms compromises effectiveness of the security forces”.

According to R.K. Medhekar, NSG director general, the debate competition, being organized by the NHRC since 1996, has been useful in spreading awareness about human rights among the para-military forces.

The first prize in Hindi was bagged by Gajendra Kumar, rifleman, Assam Rifles, and in English by Navdeep Singh Heera, assistant commandant, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The winners were decided by a three-member panel of jury headed by Satyabrata Pal, Member, NHRC.

“Despite the challenges of their duties, the security forces should be sensitive towards the human rights,” said Pal.
