New Delhi : Women make up 24 percent of the Indian Youth Congress’ (IYC) 3.7 million members enrolled in 14 state units.
This is despite Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s repeated appeals to women to join the organisation.
The IYC, which is holding a two-day meeting beginning Monday, has released the statistics of about 3.7 million members in 14 of its 35 state units.
In Daman and Diu, there are only 84 women among 6,294 members. Puducherry has 26,444 of the total of 67,848.
In all, 11 million members have enrolled, an IYC leader said.
A ‘state unit’ of IYC is different from the official jurisdiction. For organisational elections, the IYC has divided Uttar Pradesh into four state units while in Maharashtra, Mumbai city is a separate state unit.
Among other states, the Haryana IYC unit recorded only 11 percent women, Gujarat 12 percent, Bihar unit 22 percent and Jharkhand a third of the 240,100 members.
The Mumbai city unit has 14 percent women – 30,346 of 217,040 members. Tamil Nadu unit has 33 percent — 423,543 of 12,92,168.
